| ...and, suddenly, first semester is complete. At this rate, law
school will be over in... two and a half years. I think I made
the right decision.

| I checked my e-mail
Monday afternoon to find that both a former colleague and my former
supervisor had forwarded me a memo from the Agency director informing
the office that one of my closest friends at my old job had died in a
motorcycle accident over the weekend.
My friend was in the process of applying to law school for next year
and had just taken the LSAT last month. We had talked at length
about where he was likely to be accepted, and, since I had started law
school, about what he should expect come next year.
We were the same age, had graduated from college the same year, and I
had started at my job only a few months before he did. In fact,
when I left to return to school, he assumed many of my former
responsibilities.
He was focused, ambitious, and hard-working, traits which I often find
lacking in myself. In fact, I sometimes measured my work
performance against his, especially since most of the other people in
the office were much older than us.
As Thanksgiving again poses its annual question, and as my
two-and-a-half weeks of exams begin this weekend, I find myself
thankful just to have the opportunity to take advantage of an
opportunity.

yesterday afternoon. One of the second-year students leading our tour group
around campus remarked to me that law school was like high school because you
have the same group of students in all your classes. I think I may like it
there after all.

| The downside to sleeping only three hours and getting up early to see what your friend's 5am commute on BART to San Francisco is like is the nausea that sticks with you the rest of the day. However, watching the sunrise over the Bay Bridge makes it all worthwhile. |
